How to Merge Table Cells in a Table in WordPress?

Wondering how to merge one of more cells in a table within the default WordPress editor?

Let’s get straight to the point here – note that I’m writing this on June 8th 2022:

You can’t (yet)!

Not without some kind of specific table plugin (such as WPDataTables) or fancy custom code at least – or by doing as Joel Yoder suggests in the comments in this GitHub post on this exact subject:

“The simplest solution I’ve found in the meantime is just using a table inside of a Classic Block. Anything you could do in TinyMCE before will work in that block.”

– Joel Yoder

Shocking I know, but this feature just hasn’t been developed and implemented within the ‘new’ (it’s actually really not that new anymore!) WordPress Block Editor yet.

Why write this post then? Well, basically just incase anyone Googles this (as I myself have been doing) – I figured let’s just make it super clear!

NOTE: if/when this feature becomes native to WordPress I’ll delete this post (please let me know in the comments if that happens and this post still exists).

If anyone happens to know of any nifty ways to do this, feel free to leave a comment.

It’s 2023 WP 6.3 now and we have duo tone images and round buttons, BUT you still can’t merge table cells. 😀

Hey! Thanks for the article. I’ve been struggling to find how to merge cells in the website I’m developing.

That’s sad that WP hasn’t yet introduced this feature but yeah – at least I now know that’s now possible haha!
