Top Nine Best WordPress Affiliate Plugins – Compared (2024)

Affiliate marketing is one of the best ways to make money online, and there are dozens of WordPress affiliate plugins out there that can help you do it well. If you have a service or product you want to market, then setting up an affiliate program could be a great way to attract new customers and reach new audiences. On the other hand, if you’re a marketer looking to make money through referrals, then the right plugin will help you to manage your affiliate links. With both these needs in mind, WordPress affiliate plugins fall into two categories:

  • Affiliate plugins for merchants/vendors: These plugins help you to create an affiliate program for your own products and services. This is a great way to reward your customers for referrals and encourage affiliate marketers to talk more about your business.
  • Affiliate plugins for marketers: These plugins help you to make the most of existing affiliate plugins by giving you different display options for your links. Some also offer features such as link cloaking and automated updates to broken affiliate links.

In this guide, I’ll share the best WordPress affiliate plugins, with key details on their features and performance. I’ve tested each of these plugins, taking a close look at ease of use, variety of features and cost to identify the best for merchants and marketers.

Why Affiliate Marketing Programs Work

Affiliate marketing programs turn customers and reviewers into sales representatives. Using a commission-based system, every sale through their affiliate link earns them a small portion of the profits, giving them a financial incentive to recommend your work passionately and often.

Affiliate marketing is a massive industry, accounting for 15% of all digital revenue and more than 16% of all ecommerce sales in the US and Canada. Many blogs, review sites and influencers rely on this type of marketing for some or all of their income. And, as one of the best ways to earn passive income, affiliate marketing draws thousands of new marketers in every day. In fact, the industry is set to grow by 10% over the next few years.

In other words, affiliate marketing is one of the best ways to harness the power of your audience for increased sales.

What Makes a Good WordPress Affiliate Plugin?

There are two types of affiliate plugins for WordPress. The first type, affiliate plugins for merchants or vendors, helps you to create an affiliate program for your own products or services. The second type, affiliate plugins for marketers, helps you to display affiliate links and products more effectively.

Affiliate Plugins for Merchants

The primary thing to look for in an affiliate plugin for merchants is ease of use. You shouldn’t need to learn code or go through a convoluted process to perform basic functions. Once set up, the plugin should operate the whole affiliate program, with your main duty being to find affiliates.

Look for an affiliate plugin that makes it easy to perform the following tasks:

  • Customize the commission rate affiliates receive.
  • Create affiliate links.
  • Manage affiliate links.
  • Build shareable referral links.
  • Track sales and conversions made through your affiliate program and top affiliate campaigns.
  • Easily add affiliate links to your posts and pages.
  • Create an easy-to-use affiliate portal where marketers can find links and details of the affiliate program agreement.
  • Offer a referral link generator in the affiliate portal.
  • Track referrals.
  • Set up automated payouts for affiliates.
  • Customize any emails affiliates receive when they apply for/are accepted to your affiliate program.

Some affiliate plugins may also offer advanced features, such as the ability to create multiple affiliate levels or provide special rewards for top-grossing affiliates.

Last, but certainly not least, you want a plugin that works well with the tools you’re already using. It should offer integration with WooCommerce (or your preferred ecommerce system) and a variety of membership plugins.

Affiliate plugins for marketers

If you’re a marketer looking for a plugin to manage the affiliate programs you’re part of, there are a few features you’ll want to keep an eye out for:

  • Compatibility with affiliate programs you’re part of, such as Amazon Associates.
  • Ability to shorten links.
  • Automated link checking to make sure all links are current.
  • Multiple ways to display affiliate links, such as images.
  • Detailed reporting.

You’ll also want to make sure the plugin is easy to use and comes with high-quality documentation to help with setup.

EasyAffiliate, formerly known as Affiliate Royale, is an easy-to-use WordPress affiliate plugin from WP Engine, the creators of MemberPress. The plugin integrates seamlessly with WordPress and a variety of popular WordPress plugins.

One thing I really like about EasyAffiliate is the ability to personalize the affiliate dashboard with the WordPress Customizer, creating a branded experience for your affiliates. You can also customize what different affiliates see, including limiting creative assets to specific affiliate tiers.

These include common customization options such as the ability to create affiliate tiers (referred to as ‘Groups’) and more unusual options, such as signup commissions.

Another thing I like about Post Affiliate Pro is the ability to create several unique banner types. These include custom HTML banners, Page Peel promotions, SmartLinks banners and ZIP banners.

Post Affiliate Pro also offers some of the most extensive tracking in the industry. This includes the use of numerous tracking methods and several types of reports.

Notable Features

  • Easy setup.
  • Turn users registered on your site into affiliates.
  • Customize payment rate per affiliate or per product.
  • Set a custom time for referral cookies to last, allowing affiliates to earn money from sales that aren’t made in the initial referral session.
  • Shortcode for affiliate registration.
  • Commission status changes automatically when order status changes.
  • Affiliate dashboard.
  • Affiliate coupons.
  • ‘Generate Link’ shortcode.
  • Set automated payments when a certain earnings threshold is reached.
  • Set automated payments for a specific date each month.
  • Only pay commissions older than a certain number of days.
  • Advanced reporting.
  • Payments through PayPal, Stripe and direct-to-bank transfers.

Overview

YITH WooCommerce Affiliates is a specialized affiliate plugin for WooCommerce users. This plugin makes it easy to register, view and manage affiliates through your WordPress dashboard. YITH WooCommerce Affiliates also uses shortcodes for a variety of functions, including affiliate registration.

One thing I really like about this plugin is the ability to set automated payments for when affiliates reach a certain earnings threshold. You can use this to eliminate micro-transactions and reduce the overall number of payments made.

However, this plugin does have its drawbacks. First, the affiliate coupon system is clunky and poorly tracked. Second, YITH WooCommerce Affiliates only offers integrations with WooCommerce tools — there are no integrations for other ecommerce tools, marketing tools or membership plugins.

Cost: YITH offers a free plugin with access to shortcodes and other basic affiliate management features. The premium plugin is available for $139.99 a year.

Who this plugin is best for: WooCommerce users who want to create a simple affiliate program.

  • Ability to set a specific expiration date for cookies.

  • Refund protection.
  • Chart-based reporting.
  • Detailed payout history.

Overview

Solid Affiliate is an easy-to-use affiliate plugin that makes it possible to create your own affiliate program in a few minutes. The simplicity doesn’t mean this plugin is less robust than other options on this list, though. In fact, Solid Affiliate offers several advanced features, including the ability to set up commissions for recurring payments and to set an expiration date for cookies.

One thing I really appreciated about Solid Affiliate is how seamless the affiliate experience is. People can sign up, use the referral link generator to grab affiliate links, and start making referrals in just a couple of minutes. The affiliate dashboard also displays analytics information, so people can see how many of their referrals are converting and how much money they’re making.

Speaking of money, payment is also easy with Solid Affiliate thanks to PayPal integration and a payment tool that reminds admins to process bulk payments. You can also export affiliate sales data to facilitate manual payment and make sure all of your records are backed up.

The only drawback of Solid Affiliate is this plugin is only compatible with WooCommerce. If you’re using a different ecommerce plugin you’ll need to look at one of the other options on this list.

Cost: All Solid Affiliate plans include all of the plugin’s features and add-ons. The only difference is how many site licenses you get. The Personal plan includes one site license for $149 in the first year (renews at $199 a year), the Expert plan includes three site licenses for $199 in the first year (renews at $269 a year), and the Professional plan includes ten site licenses for $299 in the first year (renews at $399 a year).

Who this plugin is best for: Business owners who use WooCommerce and want to create a robust affiliate program without spending a lot of time on setup.

Top WordPress Affiliate Plugins for Marketers

AAWP

Best affiliate plugins for WordPress: AAWP homepage

Notable Features

  • Compatibility with numerous international Amazon partner networks.
  • Automated data updates.
  • Comparison tables, product boxes and other widgets.
  • AAWP browser extension to create affiliate links as you browse.
  • Link shortener.
  • Geotargeting to make sure people are sent to their local Amazon store.
  • Extra commissions through Amazon Prime signups.
  • Developer tools for further customization.

Overview

AAWP is a little different than other plugins on this list. Instead of letting you create your own affiliate program, this plugin helps you to sell products through the Amazon Associates program. AAWP offers a variety of product display widgets to do this, including comparison tables and product boxes. These widgets also have automated data updates, so if something about the product (such as price) changes you won’t have to update it manually.

I found the initial setup process for AAWP somewhat confusing, but after connecting the plugin to my Amazon Associates account things got much easier. The widgets are seamlessly integrated with the WordPress block editor and offer a good range of customization options.

Cost: AAWP offers all core features on every plan and all plans are lifetime licenses, so you won’t have to worry about renewal fees. The Personal plan costs €49 and offers one site license. You can also get three site licenses for €129, ten site licenses for €249, or 25 site licenses for €399.

Who this plugin is best for: People who want to want to use Amazon Associates to monetize their WordPress sites.

ThirstyAffiliates

Best WordPress Affiliate Plugins: ThirstyAffiliates
ThirstyAffiliates homepage.
RequirementsInstallationsRating
5.0 or higher30,000+4.5/5 stars

Notable Features

The following features are available with the Basic plan of ThirstyAffiliates Pro:

  • Amazon API compatibility.
  • Link cloaking/shortening.
  • Automated linking on relevant keywords.
  • Geolocation link redirects.
  • Automated affiliate disclosure statements.
  • Automated 404 checker.
  • Advanced ways to display links, such as images.
  • REST API compatibility.
  • Advanced reporting.
  • Link scheduling for limited-time promotions.
  • WooCommerce External Products integration.

Overview

ThirstyAffiliates is a link cloaking plugin that helps you to turn long, ugly affiliate links into shorter URLs that appear more trustworthy to the consumer. You can use this plugin to fully customize what your affiliate links will look like and how they behave, easily toggling things such as whether or not affiliate links open in a new tab. ThirstyAffiliates is also compatible with a wide variety of affiliate program APIs, including Amazon Associates and most REST APIs.

What I enjoyed most about ThirstyAffiliates was how easy it is to set up, despite the number of settings. Everything is laid out well, especially the affiliate link database. The process for importing the Amazon API is also quite straightforward, and, if you do run into trouble, the documentation is both extensive and easy to understand.

Another neat thing about ThirstyAffiliates is you don’t necessarily need to pay for it. The main ThirstyAffiliates plugin is free and includes the link cloaking/shortener tool, the ability to display affiliate links in a variety of ways, and the built-in link checker that fixes broken affiliate links. However, I think features such as geolocation make it worth paying for the ThirstyAffiliates Pro add-on.

Cost: You can get the core ThirstyAffiliates plugin for free, and, if you only have one site, ThirstyAffiliates Pro costs $49 for the first year ($99 upon renewal). You can also get five site licenses for $99 in the first year ($149 upon renewal) or ten site licenses for $149 in the first year ($199 upon renewal).

Who this plugin is best for: Affiliate marketers who want the option to work with more than just Amazon.

AdSanity

Best affiliate plugins for WordPress: AdSanity
AdSanity homepage.

Notable Features

The following features are available on the AdSanity Basic plan:

  • HTML5, image and text ads.
  • Ability to create local ads.
  • Ability to connect local ads to affiliate links.
  • Compatibility with external ad networks.
  • Multiple ad sizes.
  • Ability to sort ads into groups.
  • Detailed reporting.
  • Access to add-ons for custom ad sizing, image caching and the ability to create ordered groups.

Overview

AdSanity is a little different from the other options on this list in that it’s technically for traditional advertising programs, not affiliate programs. This plugin makes it easy to build your own ads with affiliate links, or import ads from external advertising programs. AdSanity also tracks views and clicks on all of your ads to help you to understand how well your site is converting.

What I like about this plugin is it gives you a wide range of monetization options. You can create localized ads for your own products, connect localized ads to affiliate programs to earn affiliate income, join advertising networks for companies you love and even sell ads directly to companies in your industry. This diversification can help you to create a future-proof business.

The only drawback is it doesn’t work with Adblock. If you use Adblock, you’ll need to disable it to use the plugin properly. Ads created with this plugin will also generally be blocked by Adblock. There is, however, a separate add-on for $19 a year (or bundled into one of the more advanced plans) that detects Adblock and requests that users pause it.

Cost: There are three AdSanity plans:

  • Basic: Available for $59 a year. This plan includes one site license for all core plugin features, plus three add-ons for things such as custom ad sizes and image caching.
  • Pro: Available for $179 a year, this plan includes unlimited site licenses for everything from the Basic plan, plus eight Pro add-ons for things such as Adblock detection and integration with Google Analytics.
  • Lifetime: Available for a one-time payment of $499, this plan includes everything from the Pro plan, all purchased with a lifetime membership.

You can see the full details on the AdSanity pricing page.

Who this plugin is best for: Business owners who want to run more traditional advertising programs on their sites, as well as doing affiliate marketing.
